Internet Use Policy

Policy for using computers and the internet.

The following procedures and guidelines are used to help ensure appropriate use of the Internet at Wellsville Public Library. Only members who have signed the Internet User Policy and have a valid card may use the computers, except in the case of adults visiting the area from other counties or states who are allowed a 20 minute guest pass for the computers. Children under 10 years of age are not eligible.

Minor Use of the Internet

Filtering software has been placed on the library computers to limit access by minors to inappropriate materials on the internet. However, technology protection devices are not 100% effective in blocking inappropriate materials. Parents/guardians are responsible for supervising their children's internet sessions.
Minors shall not use library resources to engage in "hacking" or attempts to otherwise compromise system security or engage in any illegal activities on the Internet.
Minors should use caution in their use of electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications, as these forms of communication can expose minors to dangerous situations.
Minors must be at least 10 years old to have computer usage.

Adult use of the Internet

Adults shall not access material that is obscene or is child pornography.

Any violation of library technology use policy may result in loss of library-provided access to the Internet. Additional disciplinary action my be determined.

Wireless Access Policy

The Wellsville Public Library provides free wireless Internet access during normal library business hours for users with portable computers or devices capable of receiving wireless signals.

As with most public wireless service, the library's wireless connection is not secure. Cautious and informed wireless users should not transmit their credit card information, passwords and any other sensitive personal information while using our wireless access point.

Library staff will provide passwords to members presenting a current library card.

Use of the wireless network is governed by the Wellsville Public Library Use Policy located in the library manual. A patron may ask to read this part of the manual at the circulation desk.
